dunnn dun DUN DUN DUN
So [info]buggery and I saw Iron Man tonight.

Oh, so, SO good to see Robert Downey, Jr. up on screen again. He stole the show, as is right and proper, and the meta behind the casting there... well, sparkly hearts abound. The special effects were utterly KICK ASS, and yes, I was totally making noises and jerking around in my seat for the flight sequences, because DAMN.

That said, oh, do the plot monsters ever abound. There were any number of moments of PHYSICS DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT and BIOLOGY DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT and LAW ENFORCEMENT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT and HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS DON'T WORK LIKE -- you get the picture. Jack and I spent a fair amount of time mocking what was on-screen, *too*.

Worth seeing it in a theater? Yeah. The effects were just that good, and there's a lot that didn't make it into the previews.

Worth seeing it more than once? *waves a hand* *We* will -- but we kinda lust for Downey and always have.

Worth staying until the end of the credits? Yes, yes, and YES. Total fangasm there, and I'm not even a Marvel girl.

Other thoughts... just a *little* slashiness between Stark and Rhodes. Stark and Potts... adorable. Paltrow lit up the screen and totally made the most of that romantic lead thing. Jeff Bridges -- LOOKS SO WEIRD OMG. Nice creepy father-figure schtick, though.

I don't know what it is with the Bridges brothers lately, but I've been finding them both creepy. The thing is, with Jeff in IM, that's fine; I'm pretty sure we were supposed to find him creepy. But Beau in Stargate ... I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to find the general in charge of Stargate Command creepy/evil. Unless there are anvils being dropped to the effect that he's going to go bad, and there weren't.

Anyway, Robert Downey Jr. was fabulous, wonderful, and oh-so-hot, and I adored the movie. Yeah, there was loads of unrealistic stuff, but for a movie based on a comic book, it was actually fairly realistic. Relatively speaking. ;-)

I don't watch Stargate, but I can believe in the creepy there. I think it's always been there with them, lurking under those normal-guy good looks. Something in the eyes...

unbidden.

symbols here inverted with coming of age becoming a descent rather than the climb up the mountain to honor. Not passing the torch held high but the guttering candle. Batman needs a Robin, and he does, sure he does, but is that all a Batman needs? is that the only role that can go empty, need a fill-in, understudy?
All plays, all the good plays, all the Hamlets and the morality shows of the midievil stages, all of them had clowns. Batman is one big kissoff to morality plays, but the imagery he takes to himself is homage more than it is mockery, and maybe he needs that too.
Batman needs a Robin but if he's got one of those.
Doesnt Batman need a Joker too?

I think it all depends on which Batman narrative one subscribes to. If you believe that he's a part of the night because that's just how he is, then yes, he needs a Joker. If you believe that he's part of the night because he doesn't know how to be a part of the day... not necessarily.

Obviously, that's pretty simplistic, but I subscribe to the latter view.
