I just renamed the files on teland because a rather gratitude-inducing individual informed me that -- somehow -- it got indexed on google, which... no.

WORLD OF NO.

I -- look. It could be as simple as the fact that I've been using my gmail to point people to the story, but I would like to ask -- *beg* -- that those of you who have read the thing *not link it anywhere*. At all. Yes, that includes del.icio.us, nalasalad2. And maybe don't write out the links in your google apps?

Christ.

I'm going to put in that thingy to block robots just as soon as I can make my brain work enough to do that. In the meantime...

Hell. Just take the 'me' out of the file name. Save it onto your hard drives if you want it, because I'm *thisfuckingclose* to yoinking it.

Current Music: Sufjan Stevens: "Dear Mr. Supercomputer"

OMG, Mystery Fangirl is all paid back and I'm so weebly that I just can't deal. Yes, weebly.

So, in thanks for all that you -- and you, and you, and also *you*! -- have done, I'm offering snippets. I'm actually working on four different stories right now and so won't be able to do them immediately, but I promise to try.

Rules: DC or Malazan Book of the Fallen. I might be able to manage a Buffyish thing here or a Marvelish thing there, but odds are waaaaay low on that. You can pick one of my icons, or give me a three- or four-word prompt, or two or three character names, or whatever you'd like. Note: I'm about to add a Roy icon to the mix, so keep that in mind. :D

No, you don't have to have contributed to ask for a snippet, but if you *did* contribute, I really hope you *will* ask, even if it turns out I can't manage it.

*hugs you ALL*

From Mystery Fangirl:

"I only hope that you all feel like incredibly, wonderfully, extraordinarily kind and virtuous people because that's what you are. None of you had a reason to help me but you did. I will always be grateful."

Help? @ 09:30 pm

Current Mood: hopeful
Current Music: Mos Def: "Leavin' On A Jet Plane"

More than a year ago, my computer was hit with several thousand virus files at once. I still don't know how that happened, but the upshot was that, even after reformatting my computer, nothing worked. It forgot it had a sound card and would crash every couple of hours no matter what I did or didn't do. The sheer number of times I lost parts of stories... well, that's enough of that. I salvaged what I could from the machine and went begging. And one particular fan stepped up and helped me out. I can't share her name -- she really wants to stay private -- but she went out of her way to find me a new computer. One that *works*.

Now she -- we -- need your help. I have the computer and I'm using the ever-loving *hell* out of it, but the fangirl in question is out over four hundred dollars. I'm asking for your help. Even if you can only afford a few dollars, it would be vastly appreciated. I don't know how to thank her for what she did for me, and I don't know how to thank all of you who choose to participate in this. But I'm damned well gonna try and *keep* trying.

Thank you.

OMG THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Thinking about ads. @ 02:42 pm

Current Mood: contemplative
Current Music: construction

A number of the sites I visit on a regular basis have messages about how I'm stealing content if I leave AdBlock on or what-not, and I've been thinking about that now that I have to use Chrome for some things (seriously, the suggestions you guys have been giving about how to get my yahoo mail to work are great... but none of them are working. I'm glad they're working for you, though!). Chrome doesn't have an AdBlock extension that works automatically, yet -- as opposed to one you have to click every time you reload a page -- and so...

Well, it's been on my mind.

It occurred to me that I wouldn't be so quick to destroy those ads if so many of them didn't run up my CPU usage with fast, irritating animations. I mean, a lot of ads are quite pretty. Even though I don't have any interest in 99.99% of them... well, I'm me. My parents have told me that, once upon a time, I paid no attention to the television shows which were on and focused *laser*-like on the ads. This only got to be more of a factor of my existence as I got older -- until it reached a kind of critical mass when I and a handful of my peers participated in something like an advertising deconstruction unit as part of my school's 'gifted and talented' program.

(Every. Single. Student. Needs to participate in programs like that. I can't stress enough how much of a difference in my capacity to approach media critically came from that program -- and it was all the better that I got to have it when I was in third grade. For a fat, geeky, Black girl? That shit is priceless in this society.)

Anyway... yeah. I'd like to be able to help support these sites. I really would. I love watching innovations in advertisement, because they're often a bellwether of overall societal change. (Hey, have you noticed that interracial couples are starting to pop into ads more often? Isn't it freaky how *long* that took? Hell, I've often wondered about my personal addiction to interracial slash, and how much it has to do with the fact that I was just *programmed* to think 'black guy + white guy = fun times!' by commercials.)

But supporting these sites... *shakes head* It's not going to happen until more of them make a pact to *only* use static ads -- insanejournal is, so far, good about this, and I have, in fact, clicked on a few of those ads -- and I really don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. After all, moving pictures catch the eye, and that's exactly what these ads *need* to do in a medium where there's always something more interesting a click away.

I don't know, though. It's possible that there could be a successful backlash against these bouncing, flashing, epilepsy-inducing monstrosities. It's possible that advertisers will come to realize that, in some ways, simple is better --

Or it's possible that I'm the only one clinging to the past.

Either way -- AdBlock stays right the hell on.

*

Also, thanks to everyone for the suggestions about blog sites! Jack's food blog is currently in production. It looks gorgeous, and I'll be pimping it around *just* as soon as ze lets me. (We decided to go with wordpress.)

But I have to change my business/fb address. Yahoo! seems to be determined to make it impossible to use their webmail with any browser but IE, which I'll use about six weeks after I die. Seriously, first Firefox wasn't able to load it, at all, and now Chrome won't let me actually look at the mail it tells me is there.

So. I now have to change every. Damned. Thing. I'm going to miss some things. I know this. Right now, I can't actually get to any of the e-mails y'all have sent me that I haven't responded to yet. I --

Blog Site Recs? @ 10:04 pm

Current Mood: curious

Jack is looking to start a food blog for our various experiments in happy-fun cuisine, and wants a site with exposure, ease of use, and minimum annoyance for the people who surf in looking to find out how to make their *own* pistachio cannoli ice cream (oh dear god that was awesome) or homemade kefta. Is it time to move to dreamwidth? How annoying is blogspot? Thoughts?

Feel free to include your opinions on any political issues you might have with the parent companies of various blog sites, if applicable. Jack would also welcome links to other food blogs you already know and enjoy.

Says Jack: "I already have a short list of blogs I plan to link to from mine, including the Waterbury food blog." Hometown represent! Or something.

"Finally, the working title of the blog is Foodgasm, but I'm open to suggestions."

What's that you say? New fandom? Maybe. @ 11:05 pm

Current Mood: pleased
Current Music: CPD: "Zoot Suit Riot"

Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series has eaten me alive. Are you sick of fantasy where brown people are either evil or nonexistent? Did you stop reading the genre because there were too many evil/tragic gay characters? Are you tired of 'realism' which boils down to 'heartless, cold, and humorless?' Does the Dark Elf trope give you hives? Wouldn't it be nice to have more than one -- or one *type* -- of strong female character? Do you get a little chub for discussions of philosophy, theology, and sociology? Wouldn't it be nice if the writer talking about lost/ancient civilizations had any idea whatsoever how that sort of thing worked?

If you answered yes to any or all of those questions *and* you still have a soft spot for sword and sorcery somewhere within your embittered soul... you might want to give these books a try. The first eight books are available here, the ninth is available in the UK, and the tenth -- and last -- *will* be out next year. No waiting, baby.

Jack and I have been devouring these books with unholy glee for the last several weeks, and we are in love. We've been using the ILL system, but we *will* be buying copies of all of them as money becomes available, because, yes, they *do* get even better once you reread them. It's like *that*.

Here's the wiki. Be careful of spoilers as you ramble around.

Here's a lovely fandom_of_one introduction.

NOTE: I have not yet finished Book #7: Reaper's Gale. Spoil me and I bugger you with a short-sword.

So, I've pimped. What's the other point of this post? Jack's birthday was yesterday and I was unable to get the DCU story I'd planned to work for me, so... I wrote one for *this* universe. Nice and short and just a little dirty, featuring two of our -- many, many, *many* -- favorite characters.

The Drawer-Fic. @ 06:43 pm

Current Mood: intimidated
Current Music: Cam Clarke: "Son of a Preacher Man"

Yes, that.

Here's the deal -- it's chan. It's pretty *seriously* chan, because even though I've written Tim pretty fucking young? He's even younger in this one. Not *much* younger in terms of actual age, but it sure as *hell* makes a difference in terms of his character. It's *really* not the sort of chan that lets you go easy on yourself for reading it. If you can't handle that, this is *not* the story for you. It just isn't, and I'm trusting y'all to be responsible about your own issues, needs, and squicks.

Also? It's not *just* chan. It's a whole lot of other kinks, too -- some of which I've never written before, some of which I've never written in this fandom, and many of which I haven't written to the *extreme* they're taken to here. We're talking BDSM and the physical/intellectual/emotional trappings of same. That isn't the *whole* story by a long road, but it's a pretty serious chunk. If you can't handle *that*, then this isn't the story for you.

Morality takes a header in this story. *Sanity* takes a header. It is, by far, the dirtiest and most wrong thing I've ever written, and, again, I'm trusting you to come into things with your eyes open. Now, for those of you who are still interested? E-mail me at teland 793 @ sbcglobal.net. (Obviously, take the spaces out.) I'll e-mail you a link, and then you can roll around in the filth to your heart's content. I'd really *appreciate* fb, since, you know, I gave up months of my life for this, but, well...

I can't promise not to be a bitch if you just want to flame me. You've been warned.

Additional warning: Frogs.

Please. Don't. Share. If someone you know thinks they want to read it, have *them* e-mail me. For a variety of reasons it's important to me to know who has access to copies of this story, and I'd appreciate it if everyone who asks to see it respects that.
